A while back, I wrote a detailed post about our towing mileage, along with a baseline comparison to our 2012 Ford Expedition towing the same trailer.
We just go back from another ~ 500 mile round trip towing our trailer. This included hills, stop and go, long flat stretches, and some slight wind. I towed in “Tow/Haul” mode all the time, and whenever possible used cruise control. So here is our most current data.
2020 F-250 Mileage Stats
Non-towing (combined city/highway): 2,152 miles and 13.36 mpg
Towing: 1,023 total miles and 8.92 mpg
So it looks like we can expect around 9 mpg on most trips as a minimum. With a fuel tank capacity of 48 gallons, we have a range of almost 450 miles. I’m happy with that. Our Expedition averaged 9.05 mpg in over 17,000 miles of towing, but it only had a range of about 250 miles, which was 200 miles less on a full tank of gas than the Ford Super Duty.
Given the F-250 averages a little more than 3 mpg less (so far) than the Expedition in non-towing mpg, but has almost the same towing mpg, along with higher tow capacity and significantly better handling, we have to be satisfied.
