As we do most years, we went camping over Thanksgiving. Eight days of camping. Our campground was in the Lake Mead National Recreational Area and close enough to travel to a family dinner on the holiday.
Good Weather & Other Stuff
For those who have to “winterize” and store their campers this time of year, I am happy to report daytime highs were in the ’60s and ’70s (F). Nighttime lows in the high ’40s.
I guess I shouldn’t have been too surprised the campgrounds in the area were fairly full. These are large campgrounds and the two we often stay at have 234 sites between the two. We arrived the Sunday afternoon before Thanksgiving and the campground population really didn’t decline until the Monday after the holiday.
As a comparison, on a trip to the same area in 2013 I noted occupancy around 10%. Same for a trip the previous year where I did a 70 mile bike ride, staying in two other campgrounds in addition to the one where we parked our camper. I also mentioned that the campgrounds were mostly unoccupied.
More and more people out camping is a trend that is probably here to stay. For this reason, we prefer to find the remote sites offering solitude and quiet, as I shared in How to Find a Great Remote Campsite. To be honest and fair, this year’s Thanksgiving camping trip, while somewhat crowded was enjoyable. All the people around us were courteous and not loud. It was good to see several families with younger children having a good time and respectful of their neighbors.
A 4 Million Milestone
I hardly ever look at the Visitor Counter at the bottom of this site. When I sat down to share our holiday, I noticed the Visitor Page Counter has rolled over 4 million views (in 11 years). I don’t know if that is a lot, but it seems to me to be a lot. Too bad I don’t have a dollar for each page view 😉
