Patagonia and Black Friday

And so here we are — another Black Friday approaching — and after all these years I still don’t know what to make of it.

I know why it exists. It exists so businesses can make money. Lots of money. In a short period of time.

Is it a good thing? No, not for me. For others; I guess they have to decide for themselves.

This isn’t the first time I have written about the Black Friday phenomenon. I have shared my rants many times over the years. However, this year, I’d like to point out something different. A different company. Patagonia.

Patagonia Outdoor Clothing & Gear

If you are a regular reader of my blog, you know I like clothing made by Patagonia. It does what it should. It is well made. It fits well. It is durable. Many folks thing Patagonia clothing is expensive.

Expensive is a loaded word. The initial purchase price might be higher than a lot of Patagonia’s competitors, but when something does exactly what it claims to, and it is durable, then we need to look at the dollar cost average over the lifetime of the product. With this mindset, Patagonia is actually a bargain.

Patagonia Doesn’t Participate in Black Friday Sales

Patagonia isn’t having a Black Friday sale. Nor are they having a Cyber Monday sale. They aren’t having any kind of sale. They aren’t doing anything special for these holidays. The company has a philosophical problem with these shopping holidays and the consumerism that comes along with it.

This holiday they aren’t doing anything special at all. Well, that isn’t exactly correct either.

Patagonia is doing something very unique. And they would like to share what they are doing. It is about their core values. Click the link below to Patagonia’s website to view their position on Black Friday.

In case you don’t see it, here’s a link to Patagonia’s Core Values.

I find it interesting how so many companies are on the “green” and/or “environmental” band wagons. But if one really looks at their actions, it becomes evident that their stances are just ploys to make more profit. Patagonia is different. They really do care about this issues. Their actions consistently support their ideals.

Even if one doesn’t care or agree with Patagonia’s goals as it concerns the environment, you have to admire their integrity. Their actions speak louder than their words.
