A year ago I introduced these shoes in this post. I really wanted to “love” them.
I’ve worn them quite a bit over the past year, but it is the when I wear them that is important because they have limited utility, at least for me.
As I mentioned in the original post, I expected they wouldn’t breathe well. They don’t.
They might even breathe less than the Vibram Five Finger KSO shoes I experimented with years ago. So they don’t meet my needs for backpacking or hiking.
I really just hate wearing shoes. Whenever possible, I wear flips-flops. But sometimes flip-flops aren’t acceptable footwear according to my wife’s fashion radar screen. Other times, it is just too cold outside for flip-flops. This is where the Furoshiki shoes excel for me. They are easy and quick to put on, they are extremely comfortable and they stay on the foot securely. Because they don’t breathe well, they are ideal in cold weather. And they are light under 6 ounces each for mine.
For me they function well as winter urban wear. Others might find other uses that will work for their individual needs. If you are an extrovert, you’ll love them. Strangers will stop you to ask about them. If you are an introvert, like me, then the strangers are a pain in the ass.
Will I buy another pair when these wear out? Maybe, if they’re not too expensive. As shoes normally go, they’ll probably be discontinued before mine wear out. Since I haven’t seen other people wearing them, I went to the Vibram website to see if they still make them. Surprise, surprise; not only are they still made, but Vibram has expanded their product line to include a mid-size boot-ish looking thing (some even have faux-fur tops) and a high boot iteration. Who would have thought?
For the fashion conscious the Furoshiki shoes come in a plethora of colors and color combinations.
