Camping Weather and some thoughts on 2019 & 2020

As we do at the end of each year, we spent the last two weeks (and New Year’s) of the year camping. Leaving home on Dec 20th the forecast was rain, rain, and more rain (L.A. got over three inches) and desert lows in the 30s. Is this camping weather?

Words offer different meanings to different people. Many folks consider camping weather to be weather that is comfortable for camping — balmy days and not too cold nights. We consider camping weather to simply mean the conditions we are camping in. So while most of the US was hunkered down with severe winter weather, we were enjoying ourselves in our campsite.

But there are some limits we always need to consider when embarking on a camping trip. First, will the weather make travel difficult? Extreme winds can make towing a trailer difficult or even dangerous, although our ProPride trailer hitch eliminates sway.

I have shortened the safety chains since I took this picture. The chains actually “lengthen” when turning, so they were too long after the initial installation.

Roads that require chains or 4WD are not on our list. Temperatures much below freezing are also off our list due to the problem of our trailer’s water system freezing — however I will just go backpacking instead while Joyce stays at home.

On this particular trip we were camped in a valley and the upper elevations of the surrounding mountains received some snow, providing great views.

2019

I didn’t post much this year on the website. Mostly because I was working to finish up the house remodel, which has been an almost full time job for the past four years or so… what happened to the idea of retirement?

The house remodel is finally finished, other than installing some baseboards and painting a couple doors. We have done major work to every room to include removing walls, replacing most of the drywall, replacing all the windows and all the doors, improving/adding/repairing the electrical and water systems, new kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities, and finally after living nearly 20 years on exposed cement floors we have flooring in every room. Perhaps I’ll share some detailed information on the transformation in 2020.

Looking back at 2019, I was surprised that we did spend a little over two full months camping and I was able to squeeze in a few backpacking trips — so the year was a big success!!

2020

No goals or “New Year’s Resolutions” for me. I’ll probably now have more time to post here more frequently though and of course more camping and backpacking time too.

My next project is to finish restoring my 1977 Honda CB750K motorcycle. I started on this about ten years ago, stripping the bike down to the frame. But Joyce put that effort on hold — seem’s she thought a finished house was more important than a nice motorcycle to ride — funny how women get priorities all mixed up 😉
