Double Jeopardy
In my post about the Whirley Pop Popcorn Maker I got Joyce for her birthday, I mentioned that Joyce isn’t really into getting appliances as gifts. Joyce thinks “appliances and stuff are meant for the whole family, so they’re not really gift ideas. Gifts should be personal.”
To make things even more complicated, I not only bought the Whirley Pop for her birthday, but I also got her the Kelty Low Loveseat, which of course I’d be using too. And guess what? It worked out great! She loves to cuddle and we spend hours in it, especially at night when we can watch the stars.
What About Our Zip Dee Camping Chairs?
Back in 2016 I stated that our Zip Zee camping chairs were the best camping chairs ever. I still think so. At the time, they were over 25 years old and had seen thousands of days of use.
Then in 2022, after 29 years and 6 months of use, one of them suffered a seam failure. Not a big deal. I was able to purchase replacement fabric from Zip Dee and they are now as good as new. I wrote about it in this article.

What I (We) Like About the Kelty Low Loveseat
We’ve owned our reclining love seat at home for over a decade now. Joyce and I absolutely love snuggling up close to each other on it. Even though we have two sofas in our living room, we only use the reclining love seat. The other sofas are just for company.

Functionality
When I’m thinking about buying something, I always keep in mind three things: how well it works, how long it’ll last, and how much it’s worth.
The first thing I look at is how well it works — its functionality. Does it do what it’s supposed to do? Is it easy to use? The Kelty Low Loveseat definitely checks both boxes. .
Comfort
Obviously we like reclining seating. Not only do we love our power reclining loveseat in our living room, we also bought a pair of recliner chairs for our travel trailer about three years ago as I documented here. It was one of the best camper upgrades we have made.
A reclining camping chair (or loveseat should such an animal exist) adds considerable complexity to its design and probably its longevity. So I haven’t even looked into them. What I do know is I like very low chairs for outdoor use. An example are the Mayfly chairs we take with us on our boating trips.
These are very low to the ground and allows one to stretch our their legs, similar to sitting in an actual recliner chair. It is also easy to bend your legs at any comfortable angle you want.
Kelty makes a camping love seat with a standard seat height of 19 inches (same height as a normal household chair). The Kelty Low Loveseat is 6 inches lower, with a seat height of 13 inches. It makes quite a difference when sitting. The lower seat allows one to stretch out their legs while sitting, especially since the back of the loveseat is slightly reclined too. We find this most useful at night where we stretch out and enjoy the night sky.

The taller (standard height) Kelty Loveseat weighs 10 ounces (4%) more than the low loveseat. But for us, the lower height of the Kelty Low Loveseat makes a huge difference in comfort and flexibility of use.
One caveat on the low seat. Some people may find it difficult to get up out of the chair.
Most sofas have a seat height between 17 to 19 inches. In the picture below the white sofa has a seat height of 14 inches and some of our elderly friends have difficulty getting up from it.
The Kelty Low Loveseat is an inch shorter than this sofa. Joyce and I are in our ‘70s and do not have any problems getting in our out of the Kelty loveseat.
The back of the chair is slightly reclined, which adds to the comfort when stretching out. The chair’s padded quilt construction provides additional comfort. It only takes seconds to set up the loveseat.
One nice feature is the height of the arm rests are adjustable.
Another great feature are the huge adjustable cup holders. You can actually put a bottle of wine in them. For smaller beverage containers there is enough room to put something else in the holder at the same time, such as a cell phone should you be inclined to bring one with you to a campground.
The cup holders are insulated, but I doubt the insulation is very effective. On the other hand there is enough room to hold an insulated cup, such as a Yeti Rambler.
Storage and Transportation
On thing I have always hated about most folding camping chairs is that they need to be folded up and placed into a nylon stuff sack/bag for transport. You know the routine with stuff sacks — the first time removal of a new item is easy — when it is time to put it back into the sack you begin to wonder how on earth the manufacturer got the item in it to begin with. Not to mention that many of these sacks/bags rip and tear.
The Kelty loveseat doesn’t use a storage bag. It comes with a “wrap” that makes it so easy to pack and unpack. Plus the wrap can be used to carry other things such as firewood. Many people use the wrap as a mat for their dogs to lie on, or use it as an outdoor foot mat when sitting.
Durability & Construction
I expect our loveseat to last a long time. The frame is made from power-coated steel. Heavy duty webbing and polyester are used in the construction. Everything is well sewn and all the hardware looks to be top notch and durable.
Value
At just a little over $100 at the time of this writing, it is well priced. One does wonder how the Trump tariffs might impact pricing as it is made in China. If you are in the market for this chair, you might want to jump on it, as a proposed 145% tariff would likely more than double the retail price or might even cause Kelty to discontinue the product.
