Revisiting the Mopeka Propane Sensor Installation

Everything is working great.

But I was unhappy with how I had to raise the tanks for clearance using the Mopeka spacers. What I really wanted to do was use the Mopeka Halo for each tank, but they were too big for my propane tank tray.

I found a solution.

You can read about the complete install with all the sensors (propane, fresh and gray water tanks) here.

What I Didn’t Like About My Installation

Because I had installed a ProPride hitch, there was a “U-bolt” in the center of the propane mounting tank tray. This didn’t interfere with mounting the propane tanks, but it would not provide clearance for the Mopeka Propane Sensors that are attached to the bottom of tank (see picture below).

Moving the ProPride U-bolts was not a solution, because they have to be a certain distance from the hitch itself. There wasn’t any room to relocate the tray. My solution, which seemed to be the simplest was to add a new propane tray on top of the old one, as you can see in the picture below.

Unfortunately, the Mopeka Halo outside diameter was too large to fit into the tray. Instead, I used these Mopeka spacers.

They worked and the tanks seemed stable when mounted. But I didn’t like having four little spacers supporting a tank that weighs just over 54 pounds when full, especially since we are often towing on rough 4WD roads.

The Solution

I had already purchased the Mopeka Halos. Seemed the best solution was to find a new propane mounting tray that was large enough to fit the Halos. After a lot of searching and trying to determine the true size of many trays, I found one on Amazon that should fit.

Once it was delivered, I confirmed the fitment.

Transporting the Tanks for Refilling

I usually remove the tanks and transport them in my truck when it is time to refill them, since maneuvering a long trailer in a small parking lot isn’t a lot of fun. One think I found with the tiny Mopeka Spacers, it sometime one or more of the spacers would fall off, so I had to watch for that.

Now that I no long have to worry about the spacers because they have been replaced with the Mopeka Halos, I finally after many years, bought a couple of portable propane tank bases for transporting our tanks. I should have done this years ago.
