Backpacking has long been somewhat defined by its simplicity, self-reliance, and a close connection to the natural world. In recent years, however, modern technology has become deeply integrated into outdoor recreation. GPS devices, smartphones, satellite communicators, and social media have changed how people plan, experience, and remember their trips. While these tools seemingly provide benefits, perhaps we should worry that technology is negatively affecting backpacking by diminishing self-reliance, weakening the wilderness experience, increasing environmental impact, and altering the culture of backcountry travel — a culture rooted in a combination of practical skills, ethical behavior, and an appreciation for solitude and rugged beauty.

Ford Motor Company’s $19.5 Billion EV Bust

What’s Up With That?

In the news . . .

From the Wall Street Journal (Dec 15 2025):

Ford Motor said Monday it expected to take about $19.5 billion in charges, mainly tied to its electric-vehicle business, a massive hit as the automaker retrenches in the face of sinking EV demand.

Ford, which has lost $13 billion on its EV business since 2023, said it would bolster its lineup of gas-powered vehicles while shifting to hybrid and so-called extended-range electric vehicles that include onboard gasoline engines.

Campground Etiquette: We need to talk about trash

Over the past 25-30 years trash has loomed large as a problem at our at our public campgrounds. At least it is something I have noticed with increasing regularity.

Who are these horrible people who do this? Or maybe the people don’t know the rules?

Perhaps a better question might be, “Why is it happening?”

Finally, I’ll share some “best practices” for those who don’t know.

Hey, this is a backpacking and camping website, right? So, what’s the connection between So, what’s the link between backing up your computer and these cool hobbies?

Most of us snap pictures during our backpacking and camping trips. Some folks even record videos. Others bring along music and other stuff to keep them entertained.

You know, we create a whole lot of digital stuff these days – photos, videos, computer files, music, and movies. Any data stored on tablets, smartphones, or computers is fair game.

Now, here are some questions to ponder:

Been Busy After a Dumb Mistake — Time to Plan our Next Adventure

Where has Nick been? I haven’t posted in a while. Been busy installing a new patio roof. And now it is time to plan our next camping adventure. Here’s an update of what I’ve been doing. What I have been doing is the consequence of a dumb decision I made four years ago.

Yeah, I had a Senior Moment four years ago when we had our home solar system installed. My “moment” was my poor decision to install the panels on our patio roof. It was a mistake. In this story I’ll relate several steps that can be applied to many decision making situations; even for backpacking or camping. It has to do with researching products.
