Rucking? The New is the Old

What’s Up With That?

A “training hike” up to the peak of Mt. San Jacinto

Apparently there is a “new” fitness trend called Rucking. Funny how age-old things are re-discovered and given new names.

Just in case you are wondering — I think Rucking is a good thing.

Rucking back in 2006. At the time I thought is was just a training hike to get ready for a backpacking trip.

A common question from many backpackers, especially those who are fairly new at it, is, “How do I get into shape for a trip?”

It’s a good question. A common response from those who backpack  a lot, is to start with short hikes carrying all your gear in your backpack. Carry everything you will be taking on your trip. Gradually increase the daily mileage. And if you are fortunate to live near hill or mountain trails with steep elevation gains, hike those too.

Getting into Backpacking Shape

Back in 2017, I wrote this little article, Mt. San Jacinto Cheat Sheetwhere I stated

The best way to get into backpacking shape is to go hiking with a fully loaded pack. Yeah, I know many folks recommend running, treadmills, elliptical trainers, Stairmasters, and other man-made contraptions. Nope. Hiking is still the best way.

And now hiking with a backpack (or rucksack) is trending as an excellent way to get into good physical conditioning. Not only is it good, but it is a “new fitness trend.” How clever!

Why is the “New Trend” Called Rucking?

Because you wear a rucksack (backpack) filled with heavy items.

Any backpack will do as long as it is construction to handle the amount of weight you place in it.

Of course in our society, you can skip the basic gear and get Rucking Specific equipment. Who would have known?

Here’s some “rucking” equipment you can buy on Amazon. I have no experience with any of it, not can I recommend any of the items.

Summary

For me, I’ll just continue to get/stay in shape by day hiking with my full backpacking gear. No extra investment other than time. Plus hiking outdoors is infinitely better than sweating in a claustrophobic gym.
